CAVEAT (Organization) : Canadians Against Violence Everywhere, Advocating its Termination (CAVEAT) was incorporated in June 1992, ten months following the murder on 9 August 1991 of Nina Renee de Villiers (1971-1991), daughter of Priscilla de Villiers, artist and writer, and Dr. Rocco de Villiers, neurosurgeon, of Burlington, Ontario. The de Villiers family responded to this tragedy, with the assistance of friends, by launching a petition to give Canadians a voice in urging the government to protect victims' rights. On February 7, 1994, the petition, signed by 2.5 million Canadians, was presented to Justice Minister Allan Rock in Ottawa and it continued to be signed by concerned Canadians until a total of 3 million signatures were obtained.

From April to August, 1992, a Coroner's Inquest examined Jonathan Yeo's eleven year history of attacks on women and how gaps in the Justice system and the mental health system could permit this to happen. The jury made 137 recommendations and CAVEAT came into being as a voice committed to seeing that these recommendations were acted upon. CAVEAT believed that the protection of the public must be the overriding goal of the justice system, and that the offender's rights should not be greater than those of the victim.

CAVEAT's mission statement cites the need to create and maintain a just, peaceful society through public education and changes to the justice system. It carried out its educational mission to educate students on violence prevention and through establishing anti-violence programs within their schools, through Youth Challenges, and through its Youth Council presenting Youth Awards to students across Canada who demonstrated a dedication to the prevention of violence in their community or school.

CAVEAT has also organized conferences, workshops and forums across Canada to educate the public on victims' issues, the workings of the justice system and crime prevention. The CAVEAT executive published a newsletter, entitled 'Stopwatch' and presented submissions to all levels of government on improving public safety, especially emphasizing the need for an integrated justice system in Canada.

CAVEAT maintained its head office in Burlington, Ontario, with regional volunteer committees in Langley, British Columbia, and Edmonton, Alberta.
