Interview of John Hass, parish priest of Eganville, Ontario, and descendant of early settlers at the German Settlement on the Opeongo Line, an historic pioneer route in the Ottawa Valley. Hass begins with a brief history of his family who immigrated from West Prussia. He describes the family farm near the Enright Settlement and French Corners and claims he learned to speak English with an Irish accent. Turning to his vocation as a priest, Hass talks about his postings at the mission at Latchford Bridge, Braeside, Combermere and currently at Eganville. Other topics in the interview include: the cemetery inspector and burials at Eganville; his Native parishioners; the great number of deaths among the Valley lumbermen, many of them never identified; the arrival of the first Model T Ford in the area; and humerous stories of Taddy Hagerty, a renowned Valley character. To conclude, Father Hass talks about various religions and denominations in the Valley, the Whitton family of Renfrew and noteworthy historians of the Ottawa Valley.
