Press conference held by the following anti-smoking groups: the Canadian Medical Association, represented by Dr. Lloyd Bartlett, chairman of the CMA ad hoc committee on tobacco and health; the Non-Smokers Rights Association represented by legal counsel, David Sweanor; the Canadian Council on Smoking and Health, represented by Andrew Pipe of the national issues committee.~In an opening statement, the coalition urges the federal government not to cave in to pressure exerted by the Canadian tobacco industry for the withdrawal of Bill C-51 (The Tobacco Products Control Act) and Bill C-204 (The Non-Smokers Health Act), bills to prevent tobacco advertising and to eliminate smoking in federal government-controlled work areas. Also discussed is the increasing number of youth and women who smoke.
