This is a preliminary record; please consult the linked accession.Sub-series consists of documentation created and collected during the preparation of the northern development study conducted by Professor Kenneth Rea of the University of Toronto's Department of Political Economy. One of six studies commissioned on northern development, it was completed and published in April 1976 as Science Council of Canada Background Study No. 36. The aim of the study was to review the history of northern development in Canada from a political-economic perspective, and to compare Canada's experience of northern development with that of other countries with similar arctic or sub-arctic regions. Topics covered include the Berger Inquiry (Mackenzie Valley Pipeline Inquiry), northern energy resources (e.g., oil, gas, minerals, tailings), Indigenous peoples (e.g., self-government, Inuit hunting rights), the environment (e.g., sanitation), and communications. The records include published articles, newspaper clippings, previous studies about the north, documentation from the provinces, seminar papers, briefs, handwritten notes, discussion papers, and federal and provincial government publications and documentation.

Recordings c. 1975 relate to: pipeline hearings; traditional method of making clothes from caribou; discussions with Inuit women about school children, the pipeline route, and oil and gas, including effects on caribou migration and fish population.
