There seems to be two different sets of handwriting throughout the album. It is possible that many of the pictures were titled and signed, not necessarily by their authors, but perhaps by the owner of the sketch book.
Mary Montagu, the recipient of the album, probably solicited drawings and other items from her friends and acquaintances. It seems highly likely that she lived at Bovisand House, Plymouth. Sir Phipps Hornby (1785-1867) was a British naval officer who commanded the Royal Naval Hospital and Victualling Yard at Plymouth from 1832 to 1838. Mary Montagu married a naval officer named Purvis in 1843. She was the younger daughter of the Duke of Manchester (see Burke's Peerage 1886) Caroline E. Parker is probably Caroline-Emma Parker, a younger daughter of Sir Hyde Parker, Bt., who married in 1859 (see Burke's Peerage 1886)

A compilation of drawings mostly relating to Plymouth, England and vicinity, including Drake's Island, the Tamar river, Mount Edgecumbe, Cotehele, Bovisand House, the Citadel at Plymouth, and Lady Hamilton's Cottage at Mount Edgecumbe, as well as two drawings by Owen Stanley relating to the Back Expedition to the Arctic of 1836-1837. There are also copies of two silhouettes showing individual figures or groups, one being that of a crippled sailor and his family; photographs of two English country houses; a print of Maidstone, Kent; and views of naval vessels in Plymouth harbour.. Most works unsigned, but 2 are signed by Owen Stanley (1811-1850) several by Phipps Hornby (1785-1867), several by C. B. McC., several by J. B. McC., and some by M.M. [Mary Montagu?].
