The item is an oil painting entitled Chenaux Power Development by David Rousseaux Morrice (b. 1903). According to a label on the verso of the stretcher, Morrice painted the canvas after an original sketch he made on-site on November 23rd 1949. The label states the sketch to be in the possession of C.H. Gordon. Morrice who was living in Montreal in 1972.

Morrice, David Rousseaux, 1903 : David Rousseaux Morrice (b. 1903) is the nephew of Canadian artist J.W. Morrice. He was born in Toronto and attended school at Upper Canada College, graduating from McGill University in Montreal with a B. Comm. in 1924. He then worked at a textile company and a stockbroker firm. He began painting in 1924, pursuing painting full-time in 1932. In Canada he studied under Lilias Torrance Newton and Adam Sheriff Scott. He visited Switzerland from 1921 to 1929, and visited other art centres in Europe. He studied at Heatherley's School in London and at the Académie Colarossi and the Grande Chaumière in the late 1930s. After returning to Canada he opened a studio in Montreal. He enlisted in the army at the outbreak of World War II, rising to the rank of Major in 1944, and served in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. After the war he returned to Montreal and held his first one-man show of 80 paintings at the Dominion Gallery. The subjects of this most successful show were largely landscapes of Quebec shown also with still lifes and portraits.

Source of title:

Title is taken from the metal title label attached to the frame bottom recto, and the paper label taped to the stretcher on the verso.

Physical description note:

The painting has a metal label attached to the bottom of the frame, recto, with the date: 1949 and title: Chenaux Power Development, on it. On the verso on a label attached to the stretcher is a note with similar information plus a note about the original sketch he made.
