The item consists of one watercolour by A. Capel Ava, entitled: "Quebec City," 1891. The artist was active in Quebec in 1891.

Little is known about this artist. Nine works from the Peter Winkworth Collection at the National Archives confirm that the artist produced a number of other watercolours in eastern Canada from June to September 1891. The works reflect that the artist was active that year in June sketching in Ottawa at the Chaudière Falls, and around Quebec City, Point Levis, St. Ferriol, and Murray Bay; in July active again at Quebec City; in August on the Batiscan River and at Murray Bay; and in September at Murray Bay and also in New Brunswick.

Item was acquired at Pinney's Auctions, Montreal, Quebec, December 11, 2001, Lot K172.

Physical description note:

The work is laid down to a brown paper secondary support. This support is inscribed (verso of watercolour), likely in the artist's hand, in pen and black ink c.: "No 25 / Quebec from the Cemetery / June 91 A Capel Ava".

Labels on the verso of backing paper indicates provenance is Laing Galleries, 194 Bloor Street West, Toronto. Another label provides title: "Quebec from the Cemetery, June, 1891" and artist, "by A. Capel Ava" and medium and size: "watercolour: 11 1/2" x 14 1/2"."

Conservation:

Examined July 19th, 2002 - watercolour still in frame. Examined September 25, 2003.
