Sub-series consists of records containing information on the administration and operation of the Canadian Hockey Review over the course of its work. A substantial amount of research material pertaining to various aspects of hockey and sports is included. There are files relating to the organization and operation of numerous amateur hockey associations across Canada. Taped interviews conducted by staff of the review, along with their transcripts, are contained within the records. During the course of the review process a collection of near print publications from governmental and non-governmental bodies were also collected.

These records are organized based on a "file index" prepared by the CHR, a copy of which was found in the files. Operational files including correspondence and field interviews are at the beginning. Research materials collected during the course of the inquiry relating to various issues of amateur and professional hockey are grouped together. This includes research reports, pamphlets, bibliographies, brochures and handbooks. The final volume contains the files created by or for Mr. Justice Urie. This material consists of drafts of reports produced by the CHR and working papers from seminars and working sessions conducted by staff with persons involved with amateur hockey.

Canadian Hockey Review : As a result of the recommendations made by the Parliamentary Committee on International Hockey, a pre-enquiry was commenced concerning amateur hockey in Canada. It entailed a review of the current research literature available, and a series of recorded interviews being conducted with persons involved with amateur hockey. As a result of this initial work, the Canadian Hockey Review was established by an Order in Council on 1 March 1979 under the chairmanship of Mr. Justice J.J. Urie of the Federal Court of Canada. Its mandate was to investigate all aspects of amateur ice hockey and the participation of youths up to and including the age of eligibility for junior hockey.

Phase II of the review was adjusted after a federal election in 1979 brought into power a new government of Progressive Conservatives, which implemented a policy of financial restraint. Consequently the mandate of the review was adjusted and shortened. The Review produced three reports: Interim Report on Minor Amateur Hockey in Canada, A Status Report on the Canadian Hockey Review, and the Final Report on the Canadian Hockey Review.
