Sub-series consists of files relating to the Principal Nursing Officer's liaison activities with organizations involved with nursing, committees, and conferences. Organizations included in the liaison files are: the Canadian Public Health Association, the St. John's Ambulance Association, the World Health Organization, the Canadian Nurses Association. The committee files relate to: the Advisory Committee on Community Health, Sub Committee on Health Promotion; the Committee on the Expanded Role of the Nurse in the Delivery of Health Care; and the Departmental Committee on International Women's Year. Conference files include those from the International Conference on Health Education, the National Conference on Assistance to the Physician, and the National Symposium on Lifestyles and Health.

Canada. Dept. of National Health and Welfare. Office of the Principal Nursing Officer : The Department of National Health and Welfare has maintained a consultant on nursing issues since the early 1950s. Upon the retirement of the Chief Nursing Consultant in 1967, her assistant, the Public Health Nursing Consultant, assumed the office, which was renamed the Principal Nursing Officer (PNO) and moved to the Office of the Deputy Minister in September 1968. The role of the PNO is to advise the Deputy Minister and other senior departmental officials on all matters relating to nursing within the department, as well as related nursing issues within and outside Canada. She/he also maintains ongoing communication with Health and Welfare Branches and other government agencies interested and involved in nursing.
