Cette notice descriptive est préliminaire.
Cette sous-série est composée des dossiers du système de classement central ayant été créés et/ou entretenus par le bureau du Sous-ministre. Ces dossiers du système de classement central couvrent tous les aspects du travail du sous-ministre tant pour gérer le ministère que pour conseiller le ministre du travail.
Les dossiers dans les volumes 4107, 4492-4558, 4330-4467 couvrent, entre autres, le travail du sous-ministre avec les bureaux régionaux de Travail Canada, incluant la modifications de plusieurs lois, et des documents reliés à tous les programmes majeurs du ministère, incluant la création du centre de sécurité et santé au travail. Même si un groupe de dossier date de 1922, la plupart des dossiers sont des années soixante-dix et quatre-vingt. Les dossiers incluent également des analyses faire pour le sous-ministre entre 1968 et 1971 sur le mandat du ministère comme les relations industrielles et les pratiques d'emploi justes. Les volumes 835-836 contiennent des documents sur les activités communistes au Canada et la confédération de Terre-Neuve.
Les volumes 837-931, 3389-3394 contiennent les dossiers du système de classement central sur les Conseil, Conférences, comité et commissions qui affectent le Canada dans le monde du travail. Quelques examples sont le Conseil canadien des relations industrielles, les Conseils consultatifs régionaux, le Conseil national du film, le Conseil de la formation professionnelle au Canada, les conférences fédérales-provinciales sur les personnes handicapées.
Dans le système de classement central de Travail Canada, le terme "General Services" est utilisé pour une série de dossiers se rapportant aux activités ministérielles importantes qui impliquent le ministère (habituellement la haute direction) avec la correspondance ou des activités conjointes avec des organismes hors du gouvernement fédéral. Toutefois, il n'y a jamais eu de Direction des services généralaux. Les dossiers les plus vieux de ce genre proviennent du bureau du Sous-ministre et c'est son bureau qui était habituellement impliqué dans ce genre de dossiers.
Les dossiers sur les services généraux des volumes 1895-1896, 3460-3510, 3553, 3753-3796 incluent de la correspondance ministérielle avec de nombreuses associations, compagnies et syndicat, comme Ford, l'Institut canadien des ingénieurs, le Congrès du travail du Canada, etc. Les dossiers contiennent également des mémorandum, des coupures de presse, des pamphlets et des brochures. Un grand nombre de ces dossiers viennent des années trente et quarante. Les dossiers contiennent aussi de la correspondance générale et des mémos sur la coopération du ministère avec l'Office national du film du Canada, 1944-1969. Il y a aussi du matériel de promotion de l'ONF (deux sous-ministre du ministère du Travail étaient membre du comité), des rapports et communiqués de presse. Il y a aussi des soumissions et de la correspondance envoyés au ministre du Travail de la part de divers groupes d'intérêts du monde de la publication opposée au rapport de la Commission O'Leary sur la publication, 1961.
D'autres dossiers de la série générale contiennent de la correspondance, des rapports, des communiqués de presse sur le travail des femmes et le Bureau de la condition féminine, 1960-64; de la correspondance sur l'établissement et la réorganisation sur le bureau des comptes du ministère, 1931-42; et des documents sur le Pavillon du Canada à l'Expo 67 à Montréal, ainsi que des notes de breffage et de la correspondance de "International Brotherhood of Pulp, Sulphite and Paper Mill Workers" et de l'Association de la Commission de l'assurance-chômage (des employés de la Commission). Il y a aussi des dossiers sur la participation du ministère au sein de l'Association canadienne des administrateurs de la législation ouvrière à partir de 1938. (cette association rassemble les autorités provinciales et fédérales) Les dossiers contiennent de la correspondance, des rapports. Il ya également une série sur l'historique du ministère écrite vers 1914.
Les dossiers des volumes 3209 à 3236 se rapportent à des sujets variés tels que des questions et réponses pour la Chambre des communes, les relations avec les autres ministères, et des rapports de comités se rattachant aux intérêts du ministère tels que le service de placement national, l'emploi saisonnier, les relations industrielles, l'emploi d'hiver, les changements techniques, etc.
