Fonds consists of recorded research notes and recollections of Jean Oser, film lecturer and instructor at several Canadian colleges & universities, about actualities of European filmmakers in North America. The project was sponsored by Canada Council via Ontario Explorations Program.

Oser, Jean, 1895-1973 : Jean (Hans) Oser was born in Strasbourg (Alsace) in 1908. During the 1920s he apprenticed in Germany with filmmakers Hans Richter and Waltern Ruttman. Between 1930 and 1939 Oser worked as sound editor on the films of Austrian director G.W. Pabst. After serving in WWII with the French Army in Morocco, he emigrated to the United States where he continued work in the moving picture industry with directors including Garsin Kanin, Burgess Meredith, and Jean Renoir. In 1953 he won an Academy Award for his film The Light in the Window. For the next 30 years he made industrial films, television features and series, documentaries, and travel films. Oser emigrated to Canada in 1970 after being invited to help establish a film school at the University of Regina. Thereafter, he became a Professor of Film History at the University of Saskatchewan. Oser was made Professor Emeritus at the University of Regina in 1989. In 1990 he received a Lifetime Award for Excellence in the Arts from the Saskatchewan Arts Board.
