Sub-sub-series consists of letter books maintained in the office of the Governor-in-Chief in Lower Canada, 1805-1841, to record for reference purposes the texts of numbered and unnumbered (private or confidential) despatches sent to the Colonial Office. A list of the contents noting despatch number, date, subject, page number and other remarks is found at the beginning of each volume. The despatches are arranged chronologically. Enclosures which would have accompanied the original despatches to London are noted, but their texts are not generally entered into these letter books.

Schedules or lists of despatches have been incorporated into the sub-sub-series (note volumes designated "A", such as vol. 44A). Also included in this sub-sub-series is a photostat copy of a schedule and entry book of despatches from Thomas Dunn, Administrator of Lower Canada, 1805-1807 (volumes 33A and 33B) made from originals held, at the time of copying, by the Antiquarian and Numismatic Society of Montreal.

Associated material note:

The photostat of the schedule and entry book of despatches from Thomas Dunn to the Colonial Office, 1805-1807 was copied from the original held in the collections of the Antiquarian and Numismatic Society of Montreal. This original was subsequently deposited at the Archives nationales du Québec, Montreal regional office.
