Sub-sub-series consists of letter books maintained in the office of the Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada, 1799-1841, to record for reference purposes the texts of numbered and unnumbered (private or confidential) despatches sent to the Colonial Office. Most, but not all, of the enclosures are recorded. At intervals throughout the records, "abstracts" or "registers" of despatches appear. These are usually indexes in one of two forms: a register noting in chronological order, the number, date of the despatch, where forwarded, the subject and the despatch number of date of the reply; or a subject index listing the despatches in chronological order under headings such as Commercial, Executive, Ecclesiastical, Financial, Judicial, Legislative, Military, Indian Affairs and Emigration. The despatches have been arranged chronologically.
