Ziniak, Marian, 1905-1992 : Marian Ziniak was born in what is now Belorus in 1905. He began his career as a teacher and writer in 1925. During the Second World War he escaped to Germany and in 1949 arrived in Canada. He settled in Toronto and founded the newspaper, The Byelorussian Emigrant later called the Byelorussian Voice which he continued to publish until his death on September 4, 1992. In his newspaper he supported the cause of an independent Belorus. In 1950, he founded the first Byelorussian Orthodox Church in Toronto and the first Byelorussian-Canadian organization in 1952. He helped to establish the Mutual Cooperation League which remained active until 1962. Mr. Ziniak wrote and published on Byelorussian themes throughout his career under several pen names. He was also the founder and executive director of the Canadian Ethnic Journalists and Writers Club.
