Scope and content:

Fonds consists of moving images including a Soviet newsreel documenting the retreat of the German Army from Moscow and the battle for and capture of Berdichev (1944); a silent film entitled The European corn border; and an agricultural documentary entitled Forage crop improvement in the late 1940s at the Univerity of Guelph (1989). Also included are the films: The OAC centennial celebrations = The college on the hill (1974); Johnny can learn to read (1974); Reading is for us too (1974); Eagles on the river (1977); and Man of music (1977).

Fonds also consists of two diplomas from the Provincial Agriculture Association of Upper Canada. The diplomas were awarded for the best yearling hereford bull and the best two year old hereford bull at the Toronto Exhibition, 23-26 September 1862.

University of Guelph : The University of Guelph had its beginnings in the establishment of the Ontario School of Agriculture (later the Ontario Agricultural College) in 1874. This body, the Ontario Veterinary College and the Macdonald Institute were administered and financed by the Ontario Department of Agriculture. All three were affiliated with the University of Toronto to provide for the conferring of degrees. In 1962 these institutions were brought together as autonomous elements of the Guelph Federated Colleges. On 8 May 1964 the University of Guelph was established and the federated colleges became components of the new university. The Ontario Department of Agriculture continued to administer the founding colleges until 31 August 1965. On 1 September 1965 all operations came under the Board of Governors of the new University. Today the University of Guelph consists of six colleges whose undergraduate and graduate programs span the natural and physical sciences, social sciences and humanities. Material was acquired bwtween 1966 and 1981.

Custodial history:

Professor Melby was on duty in the American Embassy in Mowcow in the summer or early fall of 1944, when he was given this film (accession 1981-0233 (MISA)) by the Official Soviet news agency. While Professor Melby, as an individual, is the donor, staff at the University of Guelph were closely involved with this transaction., Material in accession 1966-0016 (MISA) was part of the CFIs Canadian Film Archive transfer to MISA on 12 May 1975.
