Northern Transportation Company Limited : In 1931, two Edmonton businessmen established Northern Waterways Limited (NWL) as a common carrier between Waterways, Alberta and Aklavik, Northwest Territories. In 1933, the services of NWL were extended into Bear River and Great Bear Lake to meet the needs of the Port Radium mine. In 1934, the company changed ownership and its name was changed to Northern Transportation Company Limited (NTCL). Eldorado Gold Mines Limited acquired the company in 1936, primarily to assure continuing and adequate service to its mine, although common carrier service was continued. NTCL took over additional freight service when Hudson's Bay Transport discontinued operations at the end of the 1947 season (this freight service was formally taken over in 1963). NTCL was also the government agency responsible for the re-supply of the DEW line radar stations. In 1975, Eldorado transferred responsibility for operation of NTCL to the Department of Transport.
