Sub-series includes material relating to defence issues and to Irwin's systematic investigation of the federal government's handling of Canadian defence contracts between 1939 and 1940. This investigation grew out of the original Bren Gun enquiry and resulted in a series of articles in The Financial Post and Maclean's Magazine. Included are drafts and final versions of those articles, correspondence and reference material on federal defence policy, particularly the views of Prime Minister Mackenzie King and his Minister of Defence Ian Mackenzie, internal memoranda on Maclean's Magazine strategy, opinions from London on Canadian defence contracts and on the war, the Anderson Reports on government defence contracts and legislation to establish the Defence Purchasing Board. Especially noteworthy are Irwin's detailed descriptions of interviews of key figures in defence issues, such as Leo R. LaFlèche, General A.G.L. McNaughton, Norman Robertson and Lester B. Pearson.
