Fonds consists of sound recordings including talks, speeches and radio programs originating in Canada, and broadcast by radio stations throughout Canada. Some programs were produced by individual radio stations. Included are entertainment programs; information programs; advertisements; episodes from the series Reports from Parliament Hill; programs designed to promote radio as a communications and entertainment medium, and to inform the public of legislation under which the broadcasting industry must work; and a series of popular radio programs, mostly of U.S. origin, as well as an assortment of songs, jingles, and programs about radio in general, 1944-1975. Also included in fonds are recordings of radio programs submitted to broadcasting awards competitions. Programs include radio documentaries on the history of Canadian radio prepared by the students of various community colleges; programs on Canadian music and the recording industry, public affairs and documentaries, Canadian talent development, community services, and children's programs.

The fonds also consists of moving images including selected programs that competed in Canadian Television Program Festivals held annually in various centres. The collection offers a cross-section of the best programs aired in Canada in recent years. Subject matter touches on leisure activities such as sports, music, poetry and sociological issues such as alcoholism, the incarceration of convicts, raising children, and education. Among the notables appearing in some programs are John G. Diefenbaker, Pierre E. Trudeau, Grattan O'Leary, and the Richard brothers. In the field of entertainment Myron Cohen, Mireille Mathieu, Nana Mouskouri, Keir Dullea and many others perform or are interviewed, 1974-1974. Also included are several Canadian television specials.

The textual records in the fonds consist of radio scripts, correspondence, proceedings of meetings, subject files and research files about the history of the association.

Canadian Association of Broadcasters : The Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB) is an organization that represents the interests of private broadcasters in Canada. The Association works as a collective voice for privately owned radio and television stations, networks and speciality services. Its main role is to establish and maintain voluntary codes of conduct for private broadcasters. CAB was founded in 1926 by thirteen broadcasters with the purpose of presenting the views of the radio station operators to the various radio commissions. It was renamed the Canadian Association of Radio and Television Broadcasters in 1953, and the Canadian Association of Broadcasters in 1958. CAB's offices are located in Ottawa, Ontario.

Beginning in 1962 CAB began running a program exchange system for its member private radio stations in Canada. They invited radio stations to submit radio programs ranging from musical documentaries to public service announcements and list these programs in a monthly news sheet and in a comprehensive catalogue updated every two years. Radio stations then selected those programs they wished to rebroadcast and the CAB Program Exchange sent them their selections. Stations or free-lancers at times offered programs for which the re-broadcasting stations had to pay a surcharge. Some 100 to 125 items were supplied per month to radio stations across the country. Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) regulations requiring more Canadian content on radio had stimulated the use of the Program Exchange.

General note:

Moving images and sound recordings were acquired between 1973 and 1997.

Custodial history:

In the summer of 1977 the staff of the Sound Archives of the Public Archives of Canada made a selection of radio programs from the Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB) Program Exchange System. Some 140 items were selected, with the assistance of the Head of the Program Exchange. These tapes were then lent to the Sound Archives for copying and thereafter returned to CAB.
