A CBC Halifax Centennial documentary production featuring the Halifax Explosion of December 6, 1917, narrated by Thomas H. Raddall. Stills, archival footage, and animation alternate with interviews to tell the story of the explosion. Opening scenes show archival footage of military trucks and soldiers. Footage includes shots of military soldiers, explosions, cavalry, a submarine and ship, and the remains of a New Jersey munitions plant following an explosion. Animated images of flames, the Belgian relief ship Imo, and the French munitions steamer, Mont Blanc, are used to illustrate the story of the collision of the Imo and Mont Blanc and succeeding explosion of the Mont Blanc.~Interviewees who discuss their memories of the event include H.O. Townshend, Trevor Frowd, and Rear-Admiral Patrick Brock. Stills and archival footage includes shots of Chebucto Road and Chebucto School in Halifax, the Halifax train station, telegrapher [Vincent Coleman], freight terminal, various shots of land, homes, factories, churches and schools destroyed in the explosion, damaged and undamaged ships, the deceased, relief supplies unloaded from trucks, army tents pitched on the Halifax Commons, the new Army Hospital on Camp Hill, a temporary morgue in the emergency ward of Chebucto School, joint Protestant and Roman Catholic funerals, boarded-up windows in homes and factories, the first permanent homes built by the Halifax Relief Commission, and the Halifax North Memorial Library. Topics discussed include: The events of World War I which brought the Imo and Mont Blanc into the Bedford Basin, the details of the explosion, the resulting toll on human life, stories of heroism and relief, paranoia and rumour surrounding the cause of the explosion, and attempts to resume normal life in Halifax following the explosion. <29mn 26s>
