Milne" and "The St. Lawrence". There is a very large file of correspondence relating to "The Tamarack Review" and a file relating to an abortive project to publish a book of Canadian literary anecdotes edited by Graeme Gibson, 1987-1988. Also found in the series is a comb-bound typescript of Toye's self-published work, "On Canadian Literature" (2005).
The series further includes typescripts of articles, reviews and speeches by William Toye (including his retirement address, 1991, in which he reflects upon his career) and samples of some of his design work, such as material from the Society of Typographic Designers of Canada Canada and one file each of Oxford University Press Christmas cards and Oxford U.P. catalogue covers designed or commissioned by Toye. There are files on his Order of Canada and honorary degree from Oxford University. There are files on Toye's stewardship of the literary estates of William Dendy, John Glassco, F.R. Scott and A.J.M. Smith, and a file on the tribute to Mavis Gallant at Harbourfront in 1993, with Toye's unpublished account of the event, in which he participated. The series also contains the numerous cards received by Toye from his office at his retirement in 1991, as well as a file on the staff reunion weekend at Minaki Lodge, where Toye worked as a room clerk in 1946 and 1947.
The "Tamarack" file largely dates from 1972 until 1982 and contains extensive correspondence exchanged between Toye and his fellow editors, Robert Weaver, John Robert Colombo and Janis Rapoport, with carbons of Toye's own letters. Most of the incoming correspondence is original, but there are some copies, as letters were circulated among the editorial board. Among the correspondents are Douglas LePan 1972; A.J.M. Smith 1974; George Johnston 1975; P.K. Page 1975-1979; George Woodcock 1975, 1980; Al Moritz 1977-1985; Lorna Uher (Crozier) 1978; Leon Edel, Margaret Atwood 1981; and James Reaney 1982. There are also guest lists and other documentation regarding "Tamarack's" farewell party in 1982.
The series includes a number of photographs, comprising ones found in a file on Toye's friends, including b/w portraits of Murray Adaskin (Marcel Ray, 1952) and Frances Adaskin (James Abresch, New York), as well as a snapshot of William Kilbourn in Italy 1992; and personal photographs of Toye, including snapshots taken while he was a student and later portraits (by Peggy Todd, Eric Trussler, H.R. Jowett, Geoff Hancock and Christina Hartling, among others) taken for various promotional purposes. The file containing a portrait of F.R. Scott (Swaine, 1922) and a colour snapshot of A.J.M. Smith and F.R. Scott posing in a graveyard in the Eastern Townships (195-) is also comprised of various newspaper clippings ranging in date from 1947 to 1991.
