This series covers Mr. Broadbent's first five years as leader of the NDP, and thus has been treated separately from the "General correspondence series" which documents a later period. Series consists of almost wholly correspondence, of incoming letters addressed to Ed Broadbent and, in most cases, of replies from his office; and some print material such as bulletins, flyers and informational publications such as newsletters, as well as some reports, xeroxed material, reference material and the like. The correspondence is from a wide constituency from ordinary and prominent Canadians not only from Broadbent's Oshawa riding, but from Canadians coast to coast; from social activists and leaders of organizations and associations; and from other MPs. There is also occasional correspondence with cabinet ministers and other government leaders, both Canadian and from abroad, as well as with NDP party officials. The correspondence addresses significant issues of the time, reflecting the debates of that time, and comments on government programs and policies.

This series consists of five sub-series, each one more-or-less corresponding to spring and fall-winter House sittings. It has been left in the order in which it came from Mr. Broadbent's office, i.e., within each sub-series the correspondence is filed thematically, by subject areas, which are then ranged in alphabetical order.
