Series consists of records created and/or maintained by the Official Arbitrators of the Dominion of Canada and their predecessors. The records are divided into two sub-series for the periods before and after the official arbitrators were appointed for the combined Canada East and West in 1861. A separate major series was not created because of the continuity of the registers, journals, etc. that the arbitrators created.

Official Arbitrators of the Dominion of Canada : Matters of dispute between government departments and the public over contracts, property valuation, and property damages were usually settled by arbitration. The Department chose an arbitrator, a second was chosen by the claimant and together they chose a third. In 1846 this arbitration procedure was modified slightly by an Act respecting Public Works (9 Victoria, Chapter 37), with the Government choosing three arbitrators for Canada East and another three for Canada West. Later Statutes respecting Public Works further modified the procedure. In 1859 three arbitrators were authorized for the United Canada (22 Victoria, Chapter 3), with their appointment taking place by Order- in-Council on 4 January 1861. In 1867 three arbitrators were authorized for the Dominion of Canada (31 Victoria, Chapter 12) and were appointed by P.C. 849 of 24 May 1869. Some 1413 cases came before the Official Arbitrators of the Dominion of Canada until the Exchequer Court took over this function by 50-51 Victoria, Chapter 16, assented to on 23 June 1887.
