Sub-series consists of files of the Government Telegraph Service (GTS), known variously as the Telegraph and Signal Service and the Government Telephone and Telegraph Service. The GTS established its own registry in 1910. Volumes 2871-2887 contain various card indexes by subject prepared by the Government Telegraph Service., Sub-series also contains a map titled "Government Telegraph and Telephone Systems. Quebec and Maritime Provinces. 1915," compiled by J.A. Cantin, and showing Government Telegraph lines and cables, Government Telephone lines and Atlantic Coast Wireless Telegraph stations.

Canada. Government Telegraph Service : In 1876 a Select Committee of the House of Commons advocated a system of telegraphic communication and on 1 May 1879 a Superintendent of Telegraph and Signal Services, F.N. Gisborne, was appointed. Later it became known as the Government Telegraph and Telephone Service and in 1948 the Service was transferred to the Department of Transport (P.C. 1929, 29 April 1948; P.C. 2526, 8 June 1948). The Government Telegraph Service (GTS) was known variously as the Telegraph and Signal Service and the Government Telephone and Telegraph Service. RG11 General Inventory

Prior to 1910, the Government Telegraph Service (GTS) combined its numbered correspondence with registry records in the Docket registry system, (RG11-B-1, MIKAN 133806, R182-241-X-E) and in the Subject classification registry system, (RG11-B-2, MIKAN 133768, R182-265-2-E) Besides this, there is Government Telegraph Service material on regular registry files of the Department of Public Works (RG11-B-3-a, MIKAN 133772, R182-276-7-E) and in the 7200 File Block of the Department of Transport. After the GTS was transferred to the Department of Transport in 1948, a more sophisticated registry was created incorporating some of the earlier correspondence.
