Fonds consists primarily of documentary films and footage, collected by Julian Roffman, that presents an image of Canada. The material provides an image of a progressive, changing Canada before, during and after World War II. There is detailed coverage of our social, agricultural and insutrial development, as well as in depth views of our army, navy and air forces before and after the war. We see people in homes, factories, in cities and towns, in rural and urban settings, and in every locality and activity imaginable. Also included in fonds are several films produced by Roffman including And so they live, The mask (1961), and The pyx (1972).

Roffman, Julian : Julian Roffman, pioneer documentary filmmaker, was born in Montreal, Quebec on 13 December 1913. Educated in film in New York, Roffman joined the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) in 1940 where he made military training shorts for the Armed Service Production Program. He also worked with all the major US networks. In the 1950s Roffman and Nat Taylor created the film production house Taylor-Roffman Productions which produced The bloody brood (1959), and The mask (Eyes of hell) (1961). In the 1960s Roffman founded Julian Roffman Associates, a film production house based in Toronto, Ontario. Thereafter, Roffman established a distinguished career as a Hollywood director.
