General Post Office Film Unit of Great Britain : The Empire Marketing Board was established in the late 1920s/early 1930s by John Grierson with the intent to produce propaganda and information films. Soon after, the British government, realizing the power of the information film, set up the General Post Office Film Unit (GPO Film Unit) and commissioned Grierson to make realist films. During the Second World War the Ministry of Information took over the GPO Film Unit. The Unit was amalgamated with a team of technicians to establish the Crown Film unit and the Colonial Film Unit. During the war the two units produced between 3,000 and 5,000 35mm films. Following the war the Ministry of Information was replaced with the Central Office of Information (COI). The Colonial and Crown Film Units continued under their new management until 1952. Steele, Peter. "Crown Collections and Public Information Films." 1998.
