Roberts, Richard : Naval officer, Medical doctor.

Richard Roberts was born in Liverpool, England in 1915 and graduated in that city as a medical doctor. He joined the Royal Naval Reserve in 1940, transferring to the Royal Canadian Navy in 1948. He was attached to the Royal Canadian Naval Hospital in Halifax, which was interrupted for a tour of duty on the H.M.C.S. Magnificent in 1951 and post-graduate work in 1954-1956. A concurrent appointment at Dalhousie University followed upon graduation. From November 1964 to March 1965, Roberts participated in a medical expedition financed by the World Health Organization, to Easter Island. He aided Dr. Stanley S. Skoryna, supervisor of the expedition, in the planning and arrangements for naval transportation on the H.M.C.S. CAPE SCOTT and took charge of the extensive medical examinations conducted on the Island. In 1965 Roberts became Chief of Medicine at the Naval Defence Centre in Ottawa and, concurrently, was appointed Associate Professor of Clinical Education of the University of Ottawa. In 1973 he became Surgeon General, gaining the rank of Major General of the Canadian Forces. Upon retirement, Roberts was a Rear-Admiral.
