Atlantic Geoscience Centre : The Atlantic Geoscience Centre is located in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia and is the largest oceanographic research centre in Canada. First established in 1962, its name was changed in February 1968 to the Bedford Institute, and in January 1972 to the Bedford Institute of Oceanography. The Institute was administered by the Dept. of Fisheries and Oceans, but it also accommodates units from Environment Canada and Energy, Mines and Resources Canada.

The Marine Sciences Branch (S.G. Gamble Director, succeeded in 1962 by Dr. W.M. Cameron) was created in 1961 and contained four divisions, one of which was the Bedford Institute, precursor of the Atlantic Geoscience Centre. In 1970 the Mines and Geosciences Sector of Energy, Mines and Resources was renamed the Science and Technology Sector. The Atlantic Geoscience Centre was added as a new branch within this sector.
