Remote Community Demonstration Program (Canada) : In October 1982 measures were introduced to assist off-oil conversion and energy conservation efforts in the NWT and the Yukon and other areas not connected to main electrical or gas supply routes. The Remote Community Demonstration Program dedicated 0 million to the territories. In April1983 the federal government announced that 4 million over a four year period had been allocated for the Remote Community Demonstration Program. The program was designed to reduce oil consumption in some 370 communities that were unable to access existing electrical and natural gas distribution systems.

Phase I, the study phase of the program ran from 1982 to 1984. This included 80 feasibility and resource identification studies. Phase II, the demonstration phase, commenced in October 1984. It began with 20 demonstration projects used to assist remote communities in efficient energy use methods as well as seeking alternative sources to reduce costs. This including an R-2000 multi-unit senior citizen complex in Whitehorse, wind farm at Cambridge Bay, NWT, small hydro -electric utility at Mary's Harbour NFLD. The program ended in March 1989.
