Fonds consists of textual records including correspondence, sermons, eulogies, notes articles, circulars and press clippings from scrapbooks accumulated by Rabbi Eckstein while he served at Beth Shalom Congregation in Ottawa, Ontario.

The fonds also contains sound recordings of speeches and sermons by Eckstein. Photographic material depicts activities of Rabbi Simon Eckstein at public Jewish ceremonies and functions in Ottawa, Ontario and the Beth Shalom congregation Ottawa, Ontario.

Eckstein, Simon Layble, 1919-2016 : Rabbi Simon Layble Eckstein was born in Jerusalem, Israel in 1919 and arrived in the United States at the age of nine. He was ordained a rabbi and received his Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Religious Education and Doctor of Religious Education at the Yeshiva University in New York. He also attended New York University where he completed his M.A. degree. He became spiritual leader and rabbi of Beth Shalom Congregation. He was vice-president of the Canadian Branch of the Rabbinical Council of America and Canada, vice-president of the Ottawa Welfare Council, member of the board of directors of the Ottawa Mental Health Association and the Ottawa Humane Society, as well as professor in the Department of Religious Knowledge at Carleton University. His sermons and articles appeared in numerous Anglo-Jewish publications in the United States and Canada. Two of his published works include "An introduction to Judaism" and "Israel: Hope, Promise and Fulfilment".

Rabbi Eckstein passed away in Jerusalem in 2016.
