Fonds documents activities and functions of the Canadian Paperworkers Union (CPU) and its predecessor bodies. Fonds documents negotiations and collective bargaining, mergers leading to creation of the CPU, administration of union locals, meetings and conferences, publications and communication with members, and the pulp and paper industry. Documents include collective agreements, conference proceedings, newspapers and journals of the union, memoranda, and correspondence.

Fonds also consists of audio-visual recordings documenting the proceedings of the founding convention of the CPU (1974), proceedings of a special conference of local presidents of the United Paperworkers International Union (1972) and a promotional video entitled "Faison front commun." Fonds also includes photographs depicting: external view of the national office of the CPU, 255 Rue St.-Jacques Ouest, Montréal, Québec; CPU Wage Conference (February 1990); seventh Constitutional and Policy Convention of the Canadian Paperworks Union (Québec, 10-14 July 1989); meetings related to the merger to form the UPIU (1972); and a parade float from J.B. Booth Paper, Chaudière, Québec (1904).

Canadian Paperworkers Union : The Canadian Paperworkers Union was formed in 1974 when the Canadian region of the United Paperworkers International Union (UPIU) separated to form a Canadian national union. The UPIU itself was only two years old when the Canadian members departed, having been established by the 1972 merger of the International Brotherhood of Pulp, Sulphite and Paper Mill Workers (IBPSPMW) and the United Papermakers and Paperworkers (UPP). In 1987 the CPU had 57,000 members and 274 local unions in all regions of Canada: 65 locals in Atlantic Canada; 98 in Quebec; 78 in Ontario; 8 in the Prairie provinces; and 25 in British Columbia.

In November 1992 the CPU merged with the Communications and Electrical Workers of Canada (CWC) and the Energy and Chemical Workers Union (ECWU) to form the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada (CEP). The CPU (later the pulp and paper sector of the CEP) was the largest union representing Canadian pulp and paper workers. There was an independent regional union in British Columbia, the Pulp, Paper and Woodworkers of Canada (formed c.1962 by dissident locals of the IBPSPMW). The Confédération des syndicats nationaux represented some Quebec pulp and paper workers.

In 2013, the CEP merged with the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) to form Unifor.
