Northern Pacific and Manitoba Railway Company : La Northern Pacific and Manitoba Railway Company, constituée en société en vertu du Manitoba Act, 52 Vic., c. 2 du 4 septembre 1888, appartenait à la Northern Pacific Railway Company, une société américaine qui avait été encouragée par le gouvernement du Manitoba à faire affaire dans la province pour faire concurrence à la Canadian Pacific Railway Company. Ayant pris en charge la Red River Valley Railway, créée par le gouvernement du Manitoba, elle en viendra éventuellement à achever et à exploiter, entre 1889 et 1900, ses 248,66 milles de ligne ferroviaire.

Aux termes d'un accord en date du 15 janvier 1901, la Northern Pacific and Manitoba Railway Company et trois autres sociétés appartenant à la Northern Pacific Railway Company situées au Manitoba seront prises à bail par le gouvernement provincial pour 999 ans, avec option d'achat. Et puis, en vertu de l'accord survenu le 11 février 1901, ce bail et l'option d'achat seront transférés, par le gouvernement du Manitoba, à la Canadian Northern Railway Company.

En 1902, les quatre sociétés de la Northern Pacific Railway Company louées à la Canadian Northern Railway Company se fusionneront en adoptant le nom de Manitoba Railway Company.
