Broadcasting Corporation of Newfoundland : The Broadcasting Corporation of Newfoundland (BCN) was officially established in 1939, resulting from a takeover of the Dominion Broadcasting Company by the Commission of Government. BCN began as an independent station with locally-produced and locally-sponsored programming. The intent of the station was to broadcast, oversee and develop broadcasting in Newfoundland. In 1949, when Newfoundland joined Canada, the radio station became part of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC).
