North Atlantic Treaty Organization : The North Atlantic Treaty was signed in Washington on 4 April 1949, creating an alliance between Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, and the United States. Between 1952 and 1982 Greece, Turkey, West Germany (now Germany) and Spain entered into the treaty. On March 12, 1999 the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Poland joined, bringing membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to 19. The treaty was aimed at safeguarding the freedom of the Atlantic community from the threat of Soviet aggression. The treaty was also designed to encourage political, economic, and social cooperation. In the 1990s, with the collapse of the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact, NATO's role in world affairs changed. It has adapted to peacekeeping and crisis management tasks undertaken in cooperation with countries, which are not members and with other international organisations. NATO maintains a headquarters in Brussels, Belgium. 206973
