Museum of Modern Art (New York, N.Y.) : The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) is a nonprofit educational institution. MoMA was founded in New York City in the summer of 1929 by three private citizens, Lillie P. Bliss, Mary Quinn Sullivan, and Abby Aldrich Rockefeller. Their intent was to create a space where modern and contemporary art would be available to the public. The museum officially opened on 8 November 1929. The first director was Alfred H. Barr Jr., followed by Rene d'Harnoncourt (1949-68), Bates Lowry (1968-69), John B. Hightower (1970-72), Richard E. Oldenburg (1972-94), and Glenn D. Lowry, MoMA's current director. Custodial history:

Some of this collection was received as part of the Canadian Film Institute's (CFI) transfer to the National Archives on May 12, 1975. The CFI received the material from the Museum of Modern Art between 1965 and 1969. The National Archives received the rest of the material from the Museum of Modern Art in 1982 and 1983.
