CHRO-TV (Television station : Ottawa, Ont.) : CHRO-TV was established by Conrad Lavigne in 1977. The television station resulted from Lavigne's purchase of the bankrupt CHOV-TV (a CBC-Network affiliate) in Pembroke. The station was then extended to cover Ottawa with a re-broadcaster, and the call sign CHRO-TV. The private network grew to cover an area extending from Moosonee to Ottawa, and from Hearst and Chapleau to Mattagami, Quebec. In the 1980s Mid-Canada Communications Corp. purchased the interests of CHRO-TV from Lavigne. In 1990 Baton Broadcasting Inc. bought Mid-Canada Communications Corp., and in September 1991 CHRO-TV was converted from CBC to CTV. On 1 September Nation's Capital Television Inc. amalgamated with CFTO-TV Ltd., South Western Ontario Broadcasting Inc. and Mid-Canada Communications (Canada) Corp. to become BBS Ontario Inc. In 1996 CHRO-TV dropped its CTV affiliation and became an independent station, and in November of 1997, CHUM Limited acquired CHRO-TV, making it the only independent television station in the Nation's Capital.
