Blackhawk Films Inc : Kent D. Eastin founded Eastin Entertainment Films in Galesberg, Illinois in 1927. Eastin, a camerman, began buying and selling used 35 mm film prints. In 1935, Eastin moved the company to Davenport, Iowa and started renting 16 mm films. In 1939 the company was renamed Blackhawk Films. In 1947 Martin D. Phelan became Eastin's partner and was responsibile for business operations. Blackhawk began publishing monthly mail-order catalogues in 1949. In 1952, Blackhawk introduced its own releases in both 8mm and 16mm including Laurel and Hardy silents and Keystone comedies. In 1975, Blackhawk was sold to Lee Enterprises Inc., a newspaper and broadcasting conglomerate. Lee Enterprises sold the company to the team managing the Blackhawk line who in turn sold the business to Republic Pictures in 1985. Republic discontinued film sales in 1987 and sold the entire Blackhawk Films' library to David Shepard, owner of Film Preservation Associates. Shepard had a long history with Blackhawk Films, having worked with Eastin in the 1960s as part of the American Film Institute's effort to preserve silent films. He also worked for Blackhawk in 1973 as Vice President of Product Development.

Custodial history:

Some of this material was part of the Canadian Film Institute's (CFI) transfer to the National Archives on May 12, 1975. The CFI received the material between 1965 and 1969 from Blackhawk Films. The National Archives received the rest of the material from Blackhawk Films between 1973 and 1975.
