Toronto Film Society : The Toronto Film Society, a non-profit organization, was established in 1948 as The Toronto Film Study Group. Founders Oscar Burritt and his wife Dorothy Burritt began by showing non-box-office foreign films, and holding other film society activities, in their home. In 1949, the name was changed to the National Film Society - Toronto Branch. In 1950, the organization was officially registered as a non-profit group, and renamed the Toronto Film Society. Today the purpose of the society is to promote the study and appreciation of film. As of 2002, the president was Bill Sturrup, the vice-president was Barry Chapman, the secretary was Elizabeth Mayner and the treasurer was Laurence Daber. The volunteer-run society holds screenings, seminars and organizes other film related activities.
