Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada : Sun Life Assurance Financial commenced business in 1871 in Canada and by 1919, was the first Canadian company to issue group insurance. Between 1893 and 1899, Sun Life expanded to Great Britain, the United States, the Philippines and Hong Kong. In 1962, the company was converted from shareholder ownership to a mutual company owned by its active policyholders. In 1986, Sun Life entered the mutual fund business in Canada with the launch of the Spectrum Mutual Fund Services. In 1995, the company entered the discount brokerage business in Canada through launch of Sun Life Securities. In 1998, Donald A. Stewart was named Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Sun Life. In 2000, the company de-mutualised and the shares of Sun Life Finances of Canada Inc., began trading on stock exchanges in Toronto, New York, London and the Philippines. Sun Life had a film department responsible for producing public relations films for the company. The media relations department is now responsible for moving image productions for this purpose.
