Stalley, Frank : Francis (Frank) Palmer Stalley was born 29 May 1924 in Stratford, Ontario, the only child of Frank and Sarah Frances (née Vaughan) Stalley. He trained to be a concert pianist. Stalley performed in recitals, on radio and in local venues, winning many awards and scholarships, and earning two degrees in music. His musical training was interrupted in the mid-1930s when he was struck simultaneously with polio and Bell's palsy. In 1945, Stalley was offered a job at CJCS in Stratford, Ontario, thus beginning a 42-year career in broadcasting. His radio work included positions as announcer, operator, news editor, commercial writer and technician in various locales including northern Ontario, New Mexico and California. In 1953, Stalley joined the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in Toronto, becoming involved with many of the CBC's early television programs. Over the next decade, Stalley worked as news reader, announcer, co-host and host, cast member and commercial announcer. He was also a regular anchor on The National news, along with Larry Henderson and Rex Loring. After a decade before the cameras, Stalley moved into administration, working first in Ottawa as Executive Assistant to Charles Jennings, the vice-president of Regional Broadcasting. In 1968, Stalley was posted to Vancouver as Director of Radio for British Columbia. In 1972 he took the position as CBC's Radio and Program Representative in London, England, and in 1978 became Resources Manager and Maritime Regional Talent Relations Officer in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He retired from the CBC in 1987 at the age of 63. Frank Stalley died 4 March 2005 in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
