Cartographic material (Electronic) Finding aid 31-58 is in two parts. The first part consists of a listing of Electoral Districts that was used by the Census Division for the 1976 Census of Canada. The second part consists of an unverified listing of map containers, indicating the container barcode to order for the maps for a particular Federal Electoral District. Accession consists of maps used by Statistics Canada for the 1976 Census, organized by Electoral District.

[Based on an initial examination of a small sample of accession only:] The folder for each Electoral District contains a listing of the base maps used by Statistics Canada within the electoral district, as well as the maps themselves, which are usually annotated by Statistics Canada.

The type of base map used by Statistics Canada varies by Electoral District, although most base maps were prepared in the early 1970s. For the Electoral District of Victoria (ED No. 59023), for instance, the base maps are listed as Census Tract (CT) maps for the Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) Victoria. For the Electoral District of the Northwest Territories (ED No. 61001), the base maps include: a 1:4,000,000 MCR 36 map; several 1:500,000 maps (listed as 85 NE, 85 SE, 85 SW, 85 NW) as well as place maps for Yellowknife, Frobisher Bay, Inuvik, Fort Smith and Hay River, as well as sketches.

The maps are on a variety of supports. Whereas the maps for the Electoral District of Victoria are on a stable woven support, the maps for the Electoral District of the Northwest Territories are on friable paper as well as waxed transparent paper.
