The records in this accession were created and maintained by the Canada Labour Relations Board (CLRB). They were transferred to the National Archives by the Canada Industrial Relations Board which succeeded the CLRB in 1999. The CLRB, established in 1948, was a quasi-judicial body with statutory and regulatory powers pertaining to the administration of Part I of the Canada Labour Code dealing with industrial relations. A significant number of the case files pertain to applications for certification of bargaining agents (555) and applications for review or amendment of board orders (530). In addition to this some of the files pertain to applications for geographic certification (551), applications for declaration of a single employer (560), imposition of first collective agreement (675), applications for access to employers' premises (800), applications for declaration of sale of business (585) and determination of existence of a collective agreement (610). The numbers in the brackets identify the file category for each subject. Each case file contains correspondence, press clippings and documentation (such as legal advice) pertaining to the issue at hand. Boxes 38-42 contain recordings of CLRB hearings. The file numbers relate to the hard-copy case files. It is recommended that these recordings be examined at the same time as the hard-copy case files to determine if a recording exists of the hearing. This information is not provided in the finding aid.
