Fonds consists of sound recordings made by G. Norman Irwin during World War II at RCAF No. 1 Manning Depot, RCAF No. 14 Service Flying Training School, and at the Irwin household in Whitby. Sound recordings consists of various military events that occurred on RCAF bases in Toronto and Aylmer, Ontario including briefing sessions, hearings of a court martial, and church services and entertainment shows for the troops. Also included are interviews of soldiers who recount their war experiences, and a sampling of radio programs including newscasts, hockey games and major speeches by political leaders including Lord Halifax and General José F. Wiburn.

Also included in fonds are numerous silent films on aeronautics, home happenings, memorable events, sports activities, celebrations and Canadian warships at sea, 1919-1957.

Irwin, G. Norman : G. Norman Irwin (1903-1983) was a pilot, owner of a small commercial airline, and farmer who resided in Whitby, Ontario between 1927 and 1983. During the Second World War, Irwin was Commanding Officer at RCAF No. 14 Service Flying Training School in Aylmer, Ontario, achieving the rank of Air Commodore. Following the war, Irwin established the Red Wing Flying Service, a small commercial flight service near Whitby. The company had flights originating from the Toronto Island Airport and the Port Carling hangar. In addition, Irwin had seaplane hangers at Whitby Harbour and Worthington Point. Together with his wife, Kathleen McLaughlin, whom he married in 1926, Irwin settled at Stonehaven, the principal residence at the Red Wing Farm near Whitby. There, the Irwin's farmed apples, producing Red Wing Apples and apple juice. They also raised cattle and horses. Norman and Kathleen Irwin had four children: Marion, Ray, Ralph and Bill.
