Fonds consists of fourteen episodes from the fifteen-part series entitled The Indian life, produced between 1954 and 1958. The Indian life is a series of half-hour films dealing chiefly with village-life patterns in different regions of India, and artisan-crafts and industrial production in a variety of industries in India during the First Five Year Plan period after India's independance, achieved in 1947. Each episode depicts village life, production, and cultural patterns in India. For the purposes of television broadcast in 1964, each film was given a brief introduction and conclusion by an Indian host or spokesperson, in order to relate the films to each other and to put each subject in a general context. The films were produced with academic guidance, by Indian film units under the production guidance of James A. Beveridge, for Burmah-Shell Oil Storage and Distributing Company of India, as part of the public-relations policy for the company.

John Beveridge Associates Ltd : James Beveridge Associates Limited, a film production and consulting firm based in Toronto, Ontario, was founded circa 1971 by filmmaker James Beveridge. The company was active until circa 1982.

Beveridge, James A : James A. Beveridge began his film-making career with the National Film Board of Canada from its early years into the 1950s. Between 1954 and 1958 he lived and worked in India. Fascinated with Indian life and culture, he returned to India in 1971 to film Music of India, a series of four half-hour films produced for educational use in the United States, and funded by the State University of New York and the National Humanities Endowment. In 1969 Beveridge was hired by Toronto's York University to chair the university's film department. In July 1974 he began a year-long sabbatical to work on a filmic social history of India. In 1978 he published John Grierson: Film Master.
