Fonds consists of a radio broadcast about the inverstiture of Lt. Edna May Whinney as a Member of the British Empire, held at Buckingham Palace, London, England and a report of the investitute, a talk by Lt. Whinney about the role of Canadian WRENS in recruitment and a dramatatization of the event that were broadcast by radio station CBO of the CBC network.

Whinney, Edna May : Lieutenant Edna May Whinney was born in Ottawa, Ontario. During the Second World War she served overseas in England, joining the Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service (WRCNS) as a Third Officer on 19 November 1942. She served in Naval Service Headquarters (NSHQ), and was promoted to Lieutenant 15 February 1943. Whinney served on Her Majesty's Canadian ship (HMCS) York (5 July 1943) and HMCS Niobe (11 August 1944.). In 1945 she was made a Member of the British Empire. On 1 January 1946 she was promoted to Lieutenant Commander (SB). Whinney retired early in 1946. She died on 24 February 1998, age 97, in Ottawa, Ontario. Blatherwick. John. "RCN Awards in WW2."
