Rimmer, David, 1942- : David Rimmer, experimental and avant-garde filmmaker, was born in Vancouver, British Columbia on 20 January 1942. He graduated from the University of British Columbia in 1963 where he majored in economics and mathematics. He also earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of British Columbia and a Masters of Arts from Simon Fraser University, also in English. Rimmer's first film Square inch field (1968) stemmed from an invitation by Stan Fox to contribute a film to an experimental series on the CBC. After his second film Migration (1969), he received a Canada Council Grant. During the 1970s he made more than ten films which garnered him recognition around the world including Variations on a cellophane wrapper (1970). During the early 1970s Rimmer moved to New York where his films received a wider audience. Upon returning to Canada he took a teaching position at the University of British Columbia in the Fine Arts department. In the 1980s and 1990s Rimmer continued to make films but moved into video production. He has also worked in holography, sculpture and painting.
