Mackey, Clarke : Clarke Mackey, a filmmaker turned academic, was born in 1951. At the age of 15 he made On nothing days, a half-hour drama about adolescence that won second prize at the NFB's Amateur Filmmaker's Competition in 1967. In 1970 he shot his first feature, The only thing you know, which won two Canadian Film Awards including Best Actress. Following the release of The only thing you know, Mackey worked as a freelance director, cinematographer, and editor and began to teach film production in a variety of settings. In the summer of 1986 he was invited to direct a number of episodes of the television series Degrassi Jr. High. Mackey's second theatrical feature, Taking care, inspired by events at the Hospital for Sick Children in the mid-1980s, won the CFTA Best Feature Award and a Genie nomination for Best Actress. In 1987 Mackey directed Target, one of the first fully interactive movies. In 1989 he won a Cindy award from the Association of Visual Communicators in Los Angeles for directing Target. In 1988 Mackey began teaching at Queen's University, and in 1995 he completed an alternative documentary feature, Dance on the edge, which was invited to the International Film Festival in Figueria da Foz, Portugal. Mackey has experimented with interactive multimedia, and designed the prototype for Moviemaker, an instructional CD-ROM for the third year production course at Queen's.
