Wallot, Jean-Pierre, 1935-2010 : Jean-Pierre Wallot est né à Salaberry-de-Valleyfield en 1935. Il obtient son baccalauréat de l'Université de Montréal en 1954, sa licence ès lettres et sa maîtrise en 1957. En 1965, cette même institution universitaire lui décerne un doctorat en histoire grâce à sa thèse intitulée "Le Bas-Canada sous l'administration de Craig (1807-1811)".
De 1954 à 1960, il est journaliste au Progrès de Valleyfield. A partir de 1961, il embrasse la carrière universitaire, sauf durant les années 1966-1969 où il est historien au Musée national de l'Homme (devenu le Musée canadien de l'histoire). Il est professeur d'histoire à l'Université de Montréal, à l'Université de Toronto, à Sir George Williams (Concordia) et à l'Université d'Ottawa. Il enseigne également à l'Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), à l'Université de Colombie britannique (UBC) et à l'Université Laval. Il est directeur d'études associé à l'École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) de Paris à plusieurs reprises de 1975 à 1994.
A l'Université de Montréal, il est directeur du département d'histoire de 1973 à 1975, vice-doyen à la faculté des arts et des sciences entre 1975 et 1982, puis vice-recteur de 1982 à 1985. Il occupe le poste d'Archiviste national (Archives nationales du Canada) de 1985 à 1997, puis est professeur invité à la faculté des arts de l'Université d'Ottawa à partir de 1997. Il assume la direction du Centre de recherche en civilisation canadienne-française (CRCCF) de l'Université d'Ottawa pour la période 2000-2006.
Historien spécialiste de la période 1760-1850 et reconnu sur la scène nationale et internationale, Monsieur Wallot a publié plusieurs ouvrages tant à titre individuel qu'en collaboration, des dizaines d'articles et de chapitres de volumes scientifiques ainsi que des articles de vulgarisation et de nature professionnelle. Il a prononcé plus de 200 communications et conférences auprès de sociétés savantes et d'organismes professionnels.
Parmi les nombreux prix et honneurs reçus par M. Wallot, mentionnons qu'il est élu membre de la Société royale du Canada en 1978, dont il reçoit la médaille Tyrrell en 1982 et est élu président en 1997. Il est également élu membre de l'Académie des lettres du Québec. Il est reçu Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres de la République française en 1987, de l'Ordre du Canada en 1991. Il a obtenu des doctorats honorifiques de l'Université de Rennes 2 - Haute Bretagne en 1987 et de l'Université d'Ottawa en 1996.
Membre de plusieurs associations, Jean-Pierre Wallot est directeur (1970-1983) et président (1973-1977) de l'Institut d'histoire de l'Amérique française, directeur de la Société historique du Canada (1970-1973), membre du Comité national d'évaluation des archives (1974-1985), membre de la Société royale du Canada de 1978 à son décès et président (1997-2005), ainsi que directeur de la Fondation Lionel-Groulx de 1981 à 2005. Il a aussi été président-fondateur du Conseil canadien des archives (1985-1986) et a été membre de l'exécutif du Conseil international des archives (1986-1996). Il a également été président du comité consultatif international du programme "Mémoire du monde" de l'UNESCO (1993-1998).
M. Wallot est décédé en 2010.
