This is a preliminary record, please consult the linked accessions.
Series consists of block numeric, subject-based central registry files used consecutively by the headquarters of the Canadian Forestry Service of the Department of Environment (1971-1984) and the Department of Agriculture (1984-1988), Forestry Canada (1988-1995) and finally by the current Canadian Forest Service of Natural Resources Canada. Note that the FC prefix was added to the most modern iteration of the registry, but even those files without this prefix appear to use the same subject-based registry.
This series, including the FC prefix, is distinct from the short-lived FR series used during the years of Forestry Canada by the Deputy Minister's Office before becoming part of NRCan. It is also separate from the file classification systems used by Forestry regional centres, which each use their own variation of the HQ system but with their own prefixes.
The Canadian Forest Service is charged with promoting "the sustained economic utilization of Canada's forest resource through environmentally sound forest management" and enhancing "the social and economic benefits derived from publicly and privately owned forests and forest-related activities in Canada" (1994-95 Estimates, Part II, p. 19-7).
The series includes records from the Administrative file blocks in the CFS central registry (1000-3999). The files relate to administration, acts and legislation, agreements (provincial and international), associations, organizations, communications, conferences, co-operation and liaison (national and international), corporations and companies (including FORINTEK), legal matters, plans and programs, reports, task forces, grants and contributions, and books and publications. The 6000 blocks contain operational records.
The 7 prints consist of posters created by Natural Resources Canada in 2007. 5 belong to a series named "Forest Insect Pests in Canada / Insectes nuisibles des forêts du Canada", and they depict and describe the following insects: Smaller European elm bark beetle / Petit scolyte européen de l'orme; Mountain pine beetle / Dendroctone du pin ponderosa; Gypsy moth / Spongieuse; Forest tent caterpillar / Livrée des forêts; Emerald ash borer / Agrile du frêne. 2 larger posters belong to a series named "Important Bark Beetles in Canada / Les colytes importants au Canada", and those depict and describe the following insects: Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins; Tomicus piniperda (Linnaeus); Ips pini (Say); Scierus annectens LeConte; Chramesus hicoriae LeConte; Hylurgops rugipennis (Mannerheim); Xylechinus americanus Blackman; Pityokteines sparsus (LeConte); Polygraphus rufipennis (Kirby); Gnathotrichus sulcatus (LeConte); Phloeotrubus liminaris (Harris); Orthotomicus caelatus (Eichhoff); Xyleborus dispar (Fabricius) male; Xyleborus dispar (Fabricius) female; Trypodendron lineatum (Olivier); Dryocoetes confusus Swaine; Pseudopityophthorus pruinosus (Eichhoff); Pityogenes hopkinsi Swaine.
Electronic records under this series relate to forestry studies on tree-ring data, forest fire and weather observational data, biomass data, and forest resources in National Parks.
