Series consists of records from a registry developed when Forestry Canada was its own independent department with its own Deputy Minister (approximately 1988 to 1995). Records include the FR series for the Deputy Minister's Office (FR1-FR999) and the Management Services Branch (FR1000-FR1090) as well as the AF series, consisting of administrative records from the Deputy Minister's Office and the Management Services Branch.

At the time of this registry's creation, it was envisioned that all existing Central Registry files from Forestry's time under the Department of Environment and Department of Agriculture would be converted so that the records would be filed by branch. These records were alienated from that registry, but Forestry Canada was merged into Natural Resources Canada and lost its departmental status before the conversion project was completed. Owing to budgetary constraints, the project was terminated.

Subjects include: Agreements (FR0050), Policy and Economics (FR0800), Science and Sustainable Development (FR0900), Committees (FR1030), Interdepartmental Liaison (FR1060), and Agreements (FR1090). The AF series is concerned more with routine administrative tasks than with policy or operations. These records are from the Acts and Legislation (AF1005) and Inventions, Patents and Copyrights (AF1025) file block primaries. Although these primaries may contain a small amount of duplication with respect to the other primaries recommended for transfer, it appears that these files do contain original documentation which complements those in its Central Registry.

Canada. Department of Forestry. Office of the Deputy Minister : Forestry Canada became a department designate in 1988 and the following year the Department of Forestry Act (SC. 1989, c.27) established it as a full department. The move intended to give a federal profile to one of Canada's most important natural resources. This status proved to be short-term, however. In June 1993 Forestry and the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources were merged. The Department of Natural Resources Act (SC 1994, c.41) came into force on 12 January 1995. The Deputy Minister was responsible to the Minister of the department.
