The fonds consists of a letter written by Rev. Dr. James Hall from Edinburgh to his "lordship", apparently someone connected to the Presbyterian Church. Hall tells that the schism of the two branches of the Secession Church has ended with the reconciliation of the burghers and anti-burghers. He also refers to the formation of the Presbyterian Associate Synod in Canada as a new church independent of its parent church in Scotland. Hall urges his lordship to support a plan to train Presbyterian missionaries for Canada that colonial secretary Lord Bathurst had opposed. The letter is on microfilm reel A-1687.

Presbyterian Associate Synod of Canada : The roots of the Presbyterian Associate Synod of Canada are in the schisms of the Church of Scotland in the 18th century. Evangelical ministers seceded from the state Church of Scotland in 1732 and 1733 to form the Associate Presbytery which grew into the Associate Synod. The Associate Synod itself, however, split into two factions in 1747 over a religious clause in the burgess oath. Those willing to swear the oath, known as burghers, remained the Associate Synod, while those who refused, known as anti-burghers, formed the General Associate Synod. After this breach, both of these groups sent missionaries to the colonies of British North America, bringing their differences with them. The healing of the rift between the burghers and anti-burghers in Scotland in 1820 also brought about the union of the two groups in British North America. In Scotland the new church was known as the United Associate Synod of the Secession Church of Scotland. In Canada the new church was known more simply as the Presbyterian Associate Synod of Canada.
